With the final day of the St Leger Festival switched to Sunday, we’ve now got 10 ITV racing tips from Doncaster and the Curragh.
The equivalent Irish Classic will also be featured, along with seven other Group 1 and Group 2 contests, plus the prestigious Portland Handicap.
1.35 Doncaster – THE PLATINUM QUEEN
Blazed a trail for four furlongs in the Nunthorpe before Highfield Princess breezed by and will surely be hard to catch at this sharper track now back in amongst her own age group in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes.
1.50 Curragh – ABOVE THE CURVE
Joseph O’Brien’s charge put in a career-best effort when claiming Group 1 glory at Longchamp, beating a well-regarded rival in Place Du Carrousel, and can continue on an upward curve in the Blandford Stakes.
2.10 Doncaster – MAKANAH
Showed promise when seventh of 28 in the Stewards’ Cup at Glorious Goodwood and was then a real eye-catcher when a close fifth of 22 at York, where he did not get a clear run inside the final furlong. Compensation hopefully awaits in the Portland Handicap.
2.25 Curragh – HIGHFIELD PRINCESS
John Quinn’s admirable mare did us a big favour when romping home in the Nunthorpe at York, having previously landed Deauville’s Prix Maurice de Gheest over a longer trip.
The five-year-old, who has won 11 of her 29 races, has never been in better shape and now we know she can handle coming off a strong pace at the minimum trip, Highfield Princess is taken to prove a class apart in the Flying Five Stakes.
2.45 Doncaster – TRUESHAN
Should benefit from the Doncaster Cup being delayed from Friday, as that will allow more rain to get into the Town Moor ground.
When there is a bit of cut underfoot, Trueshan and Hollie Doyle are a formidable partnership, as they have shown in the last two renewals of the Long Distance Cup at Ascot, as well as Group 1 triumphs at Goodwood and Longchamp.
3.00 Curragh – TAHIYRA
Meditate is the one to beat in the Moyglare Stud Stakes after securing group-class wins at Royal Ascot and this course, but Tahiyra is an interesting alternative at better odds.
Dermot Weld is not known for asking too much of his juveniles, so the fact that he believes July’s impressive Galway maiden winner warrants this big step up in grade makes us sit up and take notice.
3.20 Doncaster – SACRED (nap)
Yet to hit form this term but the fact that connections are keen to persevere with last year’s Nell Gwyn and Hungerford Stakes winner suggests she is worth sticking with in our ITV racing tips.
3.35 Curragh – AESOP’S FABLES
The way he finished strongly to upset firm favourite Proud And Regal and stablemate Hans Andersen in the Futurity Stakes earmarked Aidan O’Brien’s two-year-old for a bright future.
It would seem that Ryan Moore always had faith in him, as he was on board that day and retains the ride over the same course and distance for the National Stakes.
3.55 Doncaster – NEW LONDON
Godolphin are chasing back-to-back St Leger victories and an eighth overall and this strapping son of Dubawi ticks plenty of boxes.
New London should have no trouble with the extra distance after galloping on strongly to land the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood and runner-up Deauville Legend has since franked the form by claiming the Great Voltigeur at York.
Third-placed Hoo Ya Mal reopposes following a confidence-boosting success at Goodwood when sent off at short odds, but we see no reason for him to turn the tables on our pick.
4.10 Curragh – KYPRIOS
Has carried all before him in elite staying races this season and has the ability to cope with a drop in distance for the Irish St Leger.
Kyprios has shown a cracking attitude to come through tough tests in the Ascot Gold Cup and the Goodwood Cup and meets opposition of a lower level here.
