Lewis Hamilton’s new job at Mercedes got off to an inauspicious start after he crashed his car just 15 laps into his opening testing session.
After the first day of testing for the 2013 F1 season saw Hamilton’s teammate Nico Rosberg sit out much of the session after his car caught fire, Mercedes’ woes continued when the 2008 world champion took his turn behind the wheel this morning.
Hamilton made a promising start and posted a competetive time of 1m19.519s on the medium compound.
However, soon afterwards he found himself in a tyre wall.
Mercedes blamed the crash on a mecahnical fault, with a statement on Twitter reading: “Lewis suffered a loss of rear brake pressure, the front brakes enabled him to slow the car but he couldn’t avoid the barrier…
“Obvious damage to the front wing and nose; we are checking the car over now…”
The good news is that Mercedes said Hamilton is physically “fine”, although he looks a bit disgruntled in the picture below.
Hamilton is joint-fourth favourite to win this year’s drivers’ title at 12/1 (13.0). Defending champion Sebastian Vettel is evens favourite (2.0), with Fernando Alonso at 5/2 (3.50), with Hamilton’s former teammate at McLaren Jenson Button at 7/1 (8.0).
