Ashes betting tips: England worth backing to end WACA hoodoo
England are 2-0 down in the series, but there were some encouraging signs in their loss in Adelaide that suggest the tourists are now worth taking a chance on in the third Test at the WACA in Perth.
The Three Lions have lost seven straight matches at this venue, yet it hasn’t been the best ground for Australia against other nations in recent years.
Joe Root’s decision to put Australia in to bat at Adelaide backfired as the Baggy Greens made a match-winning 442 for eight declared.
However, five wickets for James Anderson and four from Chris Woakes helped skittle the hosts out for 138 in the second innings, shattering any air of invincibility.
England’s batsmen couldn’t take advantage, as Mitchell Starc inspired Australia to victory by 120 runs, yet the feeling is that some key players aren’t far off hitting top form.
Alastair Cook, Root and Jonny Bairstow all made good starts, while Woakes and Craig Overton showed the tail is capable of wagging.
Cook has fond memories of Perth
Cook will go into his 150th Test hoping to recapture the sparkle of his 116 here 11 years ago.
The 32-year-old said: “Not many people play 150 Test matches – so to do that, and at the top of the order, I’m quite proud.
“My job is to try to get England off to a good start – and on this tour I have struggled.
“But we’ve got the biggest game of our lives coming up and we’ve got to scrap unbelievably hard for the five days.
“I try my hardest all the time and I prepare as well as I can. It’s a special thing to walk out and play for England – and that’s why I love doing it.”
