Best Actor trends mean Leonardo DiCaprio is set for fourth Oscars snub

Leonardo DiCaprio’s continued quest for a Best Actor Oscar is well documented, with the 41-year-old actor seen by many as the most notable name missing from the list of winners.

The Hollywood star has been nominated three times for Best Actor before the current ceremony, for his roles in The Aviator, Blood Diamond and The Wolf of Wall Street, but is yet to be recognised by the Academy.

DiCaprio’s desire to pick up the famous statuette has begun to be parodied in recent years, with his turns in J Edgar and The Great Gadsby dismissed as pure ‘Oscar bait.’

The A-lister is the overwhelming 3/100 favourite to finally get his hands on the trophy, but recent history suggests he is set for another snub.

Looking at similarities between 21st century winners suggests Michael Fassbender is set to insure another winless night for Dicaprio as the Steve Jobs actor has more in common with recent winners than his The Revenant rival.

Clearly, DiCaprio doesn’t fit the criteria to win Best Actor and it’s the success of the motion picture for which he is nominated that is going to be his downfall.

The Revenant is the 13/20 favourite to win Best Film, but, since 2000, only three leading men have taken home an Academy Award when their movie won the top prize.

Fassbender is set to cause a shock at the ceremony, with the 14/1 underdog meeting every criteria that needs to be met to win.

The Irish actor stars in a biopic, plays the protagonist, Steve Jobs isn’t even nominated for Best Film, hasn’t won before and isn’t American.

Beating DiCaprio would be one of the biggest surprises in Oscar history, but the stats don’t lie and success for The Revenant will see the Bafta winner needing to refocus his efforts on getting his hands on the biggest prize in cinema.
