Face-off: 1900 ET, 06/12/2021
Venue: Prudential Center
New Jersey have conceded lots of goals in a hat-trick of defeats but are generally solid at home and will be eyeing a return to form when entertaining Ottawa.
The Senators travel to Prudential Center buoyed by a couple of narrow victories but had previously suffered six straight defeats.
We feel 1.8 for the hosts to prevail in regular time remains the way to go in our New Jersey Devils vs Ottawa Senators predictions.
New Jersey Devils Odds
New Jersey slipped to 9-9-4 after going down 8-4 away to Winnipeg, which made it 18 goals conceded in three games.
There were a couple of plus points to come out of that drubbing by the Jets, though.
Nico Hischier ended a 10-game goal drought and Jack Hughes netted for the first time since sidelined by a dislocated left shoulder.
With Ryan Graves and Tomas Tatar in good nick, the Devils are at least in decent shape going forward.
Head coach Lindy Ruff insisted better puck management was the key to turning things around after blowing a 4-3 lead in Winnipeg.
“It’s what you call hockey suicide,” Ruff said. “We self-inflicted the pain and at the end it hurt us as a hockey club and we end up losing the game.
“Five of the goals were self-inflicted, where we have the puck and aren’t really under duress and the puck ends up in the back of our net.”
Hopefully, Ruff’s message will get across to his players and NHL odds.
Ottawa Senators Odds
Ottawa are still bottom of the Eastern Conference but showed lots of spirit to shade a 3-2 decision in Carolina and then edge out Colorado 6-5 in overtime.
Brady Tkachuk has been the star late on in both contests, defending heroically versus the Hurricanes and netting the decider against the Avalanche.
“I think we’re trending in the right direction,” declared Tkachuk. “We believe we’d had some great efforts but we know we’ve got more.
“I know we’re getting more and more confident each and every day.”
Those were encouraging efforts against in-form teams but the Senators hadn’t previously secured back-to-back wins this term, never mind putting three straight victories together.
Ottawa have a poor overall record in the third period, with just 12 goals scored and 37 conceded, while New Jersey are 30-21 in that stanza.
Let’s try 2.9 for the Devils to outscore their opponents in the final 20 minutes and over 1.5 goals to go in during that timeframe.
Winnipeg 8-4 NEW JERSEY
OTTAWA 6-5 Colorado (OT)
Head-to-head: Ottawa 0-1 New Jersey, Ottawa 3-4 New Jersey, New Jersey 2-4 Ottawa, New Jersey 4-0 Ottawa
