Internazionale’s monopoly of Serie A was ended by their city rivals AC Milan last year, and this season’s title odds suggest the Nerazzurri will have trouble reasserting their dominance.
Massimo Moratti’s men bagged five titles in a row between 2006 and 2010, only for AC Milan to clinch the 2010-11 championship by six points.
With the first round of fixtures still several weeks away, Inter’s odds of 3/2 make them second-favourites in bwin’s Serie A title betting market, with AC Milan favourites at 11/10.
A successful £25 free bet on Inter to win Serie A, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £62.50.
This suggests that Inter may once again have to suffer the ignominy of being beaten to the title by their opponents in the Derby della Madonnina.
However, given that plenty can still happen between now and the first league game of the season Inter could yet make it six titles in seven years.
Most significantly, Moratti is preparing to appoint a new manager with Leonardo, who was hired in December after the sacking of Rafael Benitez, close to becoming Paris Saint-Germain’s new director of football.
“I think we have time to make an important choice for Inter,” Moratti told the club website in an acknowledgement of the significance of the decision.
“It is not as if I had to make a decision over the weekend.”
The oil tycoon will be hoping that the right appointment will be able to boost Inter’s chances of reclaiming the league title, although holding onto Wesley Sneijder will be just as crucial.
A key figure in Inter’s historic treble in the 2009-10 season, Sneijder has been heavily linked with a move to either Manchester United or Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Samuel Eto’o has hinted that he would be open to a switch to the Premier League and Maicon has been mooted as a possible target of Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho.
Moratti believes they will all stay and, should Inter’s new coach get the best out of them, the Nerazzurri will certainly be challenging at the top of the table.
But should they leave, the title looks set to be AC Milan’s once again.
