The last 12 months have seen significant upheaval at Roma, but this has not stopped them from being considered as one of the favourites in bwin’s Serie A title betting market.
February saw the departure of coach Claudio Ranieri after a run of five games without a win, leading to the appointment of Vincenzo Montella as caretaker manager.
The club has also changed hands after an historic deal was reached in April.
Roma’s new owners, a consortium headed by US businessman Thomas R DiBenedetto, have already decided not to keep Montella on.
Carlo Ancelotti was heavily linked with the post but Luis Enrique has been selected to lead the club into the new era.
The former Barcelona star, whose playing career ended in 2004, has joined Roma from Barcelona B.
He had a successful time managing Barcelona’s second string and has brought in the recently-retired Espanyol star Ivan de la Pena to help him translate this success to the Italian capital.
Despite not having won the Scudetto since 2001 and their sixth-placed finish last season, the optimism generated by the new ownership and managerial appointment means Roma are 11/1 fourth-favourites for the title with bwin.
A successful £25 free bet on the Giallorossi to finish first, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £300.
Walter Sabatini, Roma’s new sporting director, is optimistic that Roma can land their fourth scudetto – he is just reluctant to put a timeframe on success.
“I don’t like to talk about projects as they don’t exist in football. All that exists is working on a daily basis,” Sabatini said.
“We know what we want to do and we’ll do it. DiBenedetto wants to win the championship and he says we will, but that won’t happen straight away.”
However, those who think Luis Enrique can bring success sooner than Sabatini envisages would do well to back the Giallorossi while their odds are still at 11/1.
