This piece would normally have started with me lamenting Inter Milan’s many woes but, in all honesty, it’s pretty hard to work out which of these two teams is struggling the most at the moment.
Suffice it to say that they have both conceded three against newly-promoted Novara, a side that hasn’t frequented Serie A’s shores since the Paleolithic Age and, despite having played well against Juventus, Catania are a side in desperate need of accumulating points early on to stave off the usual threat of relegation.
Though Inter are doing better under new manager Claudio Ranieri, expect the first half of Saturday’s early tie to be tense, with the home side struggling to create chances: after all, they’ve only managed to beat Cesena so far, and that was thanks to a penalty.
Betting on a stalemate at the break seems like the most sensible thing to do, with a 0-0 score at 9/5 seeming like an interesting punt.
Though 9/4 says the two sides will draw over 90 minutes, it is more likely that Inter will eventually win, as they have done so in nine out of the last ten encounters between these two sides.
It might be worth betting on the visitors to net twice in the second half once they take control of the match, an eventuality priced at an interesting 9/2. Bwin is offering a free £25 bet to all new customers and using it on this bet would generate winnings of £137.50.
Some might see parallels with this same fixture last season, when the Nerazzurri, having just torpedoed Rafa Benitez, won thanks to an Esteban Cambiasso brace in the second half. On that occasion, Catania scored first, something they might just repeat this year, an eventuality priced at 29/20.
Catania aren’t far behind Inter in the three-way betting stakes either. At 13/5, they are good value to cause an upset. Their last win against the Milanese outfit came during the latter’s treble-winning season, showing that the Sicilians can rise up to any occasion and wreak havoc.
The previous season they even had a goal disallowed early on in a breath-taking start, so it’s up to the Nerazzurri to see if they can resist their opponents’ onslaught.
As a final thought, Alejandro Gomez is an interesting bet (14/1) to grab the last goal of the game – his last three for Catania have all come in the 90th minute.
