Roma have ruled out the sale of Daniele De Rossi on the grounds that his departure would hamper the team’s efforts to challenge near the top of the table.
The Giallorossi finished in sixth place in Serie A last season but are fourth-favourites for the title this time around with odds of 8/1.
They are similarly placed in bwin’s top three football betting market with odds of 7/5, meaning a successful £25 free bet on the eventuality, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £60.
However, Roma’s director of sport Walter Sabatini told the Gazzetta dello Sport that selling De Rossi would adversely affect the club’s ambitions for the new season.
His stance is commendable as the midfielder has just 12 months left to go on his current contract so could leave for free next summer unless he agrees a new deal.
Should his contract be allowed to run down, Roma would be left to find a replacement on a limited budget – making it harder for them to sign the likes of Palermo’s Javier Pastore, with whom they have been linked.
Nevertheless, Sabatini is adamant that De Rossi will be going nowhere this summer.
“De Rossi’s sale is not on the agenda, just as his contract renewal negotiations are not on the agenda for today,” he told the paper.
“I cannot weaken the side. By selling De Rossi and then bringing in Javier Pastore or anyone else, I would still be weakening Roma.
“I have spoken to Daniele, we will speak with his agent and make an offer.”
Defending champions AC Milan are favourites to clinch the Serie A title given bwin’s title betting odds of 13/10.
Inter are second-favourites with odds of 29/20, while Juventus are third in the market with odds of 25/4.
