The runners-up from last year’s domestic seasons in Scotland and Italy meet in the second game of the Dublin Super Cup at the Aviva Stadium today.
Celtic and Inter kick off at 16:30, soon after the conclusion of the Dublin Super Cup opener between an Irish League XI and Manchester City.
The two teams have met three times in competitive matches before, although given they were so long ago they offer little indication as to what will happen this afternoon.
Nevertheless, they serve as a reminder of the pedigree the two clubs will be bringing to the competition.
Their first clash was in the 1967 European Cup final, which Celtic won 2-1, and they also drew twice in the semi-finals of the 1972 competition before Inter triumphed on penalties.
Perhaps of more significance is the fact that Inter won the Champions League in 2010, while Celtic have not made the latter stages of a European competition since reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup in 2004.
This suggests that it is the Italian giants who will hold the edge going into the match, and they are indeed 3/4 favourites to win the tie with odds of 3/4.
Meanwhile, a Celtic win is priced at 3/1 in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, with a draw available at 5/2.
What could work in Celtic’s favour is the fact that Inter can be expected to be some way behind their Scottish counterparts in terms of preparation, with Serie A not starting until 28th August.
The Italian giants have played just two friendly games so far this season – a 4-1 win over Cremonese on 20th July and a 0-0 draw with Galatasaray on 24th July.
On the other hand, Celtic have already played their first SPL game of the season – a 2-0 away win over Hibs – and with their first team having won three of their last four friendly matches without conceding a goal, they arrive in good form.
As such, Celtic betting fans could be tempted to have a punt on the Bhoys securing a win or a draw at odds of 91/100 in the double-chance market.
A successful £25 free bet on Celtic to avoid defeat, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £47.75.
