There are two potential ways to solve a goalscoring crisis. One is to put all your eggs in one basket and go for quality over quantity, sign a proven goalscorer and keep your fingers crossed that he can find his form and steer clear of injuries.
The other is to follow St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes’ blueprint and flood your squad with more strikers than a TUC convention, in the desperate hope that at least one of them might manage to scramble a few goals over the course of the season.
Unfortunately for McInnes, his perennial search for goals seems to have drawn a blank once again. The signings of Cillian Sheridan, Francisco Sandaza, Carl Finnigan, Sean Higgins and Marcus Haber to add to his existing strike force of Sam Parkin and Stevie May have so far failed to yield a single SPL goal after four games.
Still, the Saints have a long way to go to match the 12 games they managed to go last year without a single one of their players finding the back of the net. On form like that, the last thing the Perth side need is a trip to Celtic Park.
Saints are a massive 16/1 to beat Celtic in Glasgow on Sunday. Even starting with a one-goal advantage in bwin’s handicap markets will only see the odds on an away win fall to 15/4. If you fancy St Johnstone to break their goal duck at the weekend you can bet on this outcome at 29/20, and if you fancy them to score the first goal of the match bwin are offering odds of 21/4.
Even without injured pair Emilio Izaguirre and Gary Hooper, Celtic are expected to ease to victory at Celtic Park. At odds of 9/50 to win, not many punters will see the value in betting on this outcome.
But after Thursday night’s laboured goalless draw with Sion in the Europa League, there is the possibility that Celtic could be suffering from a European hangover, and for this reason they could be excused for starting Sunday’s match slowly.
The best bet of the day could be to take a draw at half-time with Celtic winning by full-time – this can be backed at 29/10 and new bwin customers who stake their fee £25 bet on this outcome could stand to pocket winnings of £97.50.
