This weekend’s action sees Rangers and Celtic looking to follow the Old Firm derby with three points, while five SPL teams, including the Gers, look to make up for League Cup exits.
Motherwell host Aberdeen as the two try to forget midweek defeats on penalties. Meanwhile, St Mirren and Kilmarnock face off in Paisley after progressing to the League Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night.
Saturday, 24th September
Dunfermline v Rangers (12.45pm)
CLICK TO BET: Home win (29/4), draw (18/5), away win (7/20)
Key stat: This is Rangers’ first trip to East End Park since Dunfermline’s relegation in 2007. Rangers did play the Pars at Ibrox, however, in last year’s League Cup winning run, winning 7-2.
Betting tip: This Saturday’s match might not produce nine goals like last season’s fixture, but with Rangers taking part in a six-goal Old Firm thriller last weekend and a five goal midweek defeat, and with Dunfermline’s last three league matches being a 2-2 draw, a 3-2 loss and a 4-2 loss, expect plenty more goals this weekend. Odds of 15/4 are available for five or more goals in the match.
Celtic v Inverness CT (3.00pm)
CLICK TO BET: Home win (4/25), draw (11/2), away win (29/2)
Key stat: Inverness have been Celtic’s bogey team for some time now and with one win, one draw and one loss against Inverness last season, Celtic shouldn’t take three points against the league’s bottom side for granted.
Betting tip: Celtic are expected to bounce back from Old Firm disappointment, and rightly so. However, history has shown that Caley Thistle have been a thorn in Celtic’s side and should make Celtic work for the win. A bet on Inverness to simply score a goal is priced at 23/20 and is definitely worth looking at.
Motherwell v Aberdeen (3.00pm)
CLICK TO BET: Home win (11/10), draw (11/5), away win (12/5)
Key Stat: Both sides were knocked out of the League Cup on penalties on Tuesday night.
Betting tip: While Motherwell went out after a 2-2 draw with Hibernian, Aberdeen crashed out to giant-killers East Fife after it finished 3-3 at the end of 90 minutes. Motherwell were minutes away from winning the match before Hibernian’s 87th minute equaliser, whereas Aberdeen needed a 90th minute strike to even take their game to penalties. Therefore a bet on Motherwell to be leading at half time before once again losing the lead to draw at fulltime is a quite intriguing punt, particularly at odds of 13/1.
Hibernian v Dundee United (3.00pm)
CLICK TO BET: Home win (9/5), draw (21/10), away win (3/2)
Key stat: These two sides have not taken part in a goalless draw in their last 14 meetings.
Betting tip: With Hibs-United games always seeming to have goals, a bet on more than 0.5 goals in this one at 3/50 seems as safe a bet as any. If, however, you think 15 games is one too many to have a name on the score sheet, then a 0-0 draw is 25/4.
St Mirren v Kilmarnock (3.00pm)
CLICK TO BET: Home win (29/20), draw (43/20), away win (9/5)
Key stat: St Mirren haven’t scored in their last three SPL matches, while Kilmarnock have scored six in their last three and recorded a 5-0 win over Queen of the South in the League Cup.
Betting tip: Danny Lennon’s Saints did record a 2-0 midweek League Cup win, but their goalscoring problems in the league mean a bet on St Mirren to make it four SPL matches without a goal, at 11/5, could prove great value. Meanwhile, Kilmarnock have been finding the net consistently and are 80/1 to win 4-0, 5-0 or 6-0 with a multiple correct score bet.
Sunday, 25th September
St Johnstone v Hearts (12.00pm)
CLICK TO BET: Home win (21/10), draw (21/10), away win (13/10)
Key stat: Hearts’ Wednesday night cup exit at the hands of Ayr was their seventh away game this season, and the seventh time they have failed to win.
Betting tip: With Hearts struggling on the road, and St Johnstone scoring three in each of their last two home league games, anything but a Hearts win seems likely. Therefore, a double chance bet on either a Saints win or a share of the spoils, at odds of 19/50, sounds wise.
