Monday, January 2nd
Hibernian v Hearts (12.15pm)
Home win: 11/5 Draw: 21/10 Away win: 5/4
Key stat: Hibs haven’t won in the last eight Edinburgh derbies, nor in their last nine matches against all opponents.
Betting tip: Not only have Hibs found it impossible to beat Hearts in recent years, but they haven’t even scored against their rivals in three of their last four meetings. Bearing that, and the fact Hearts haven’t conceded in three games, in mind, then a bet on an away win to nil, at 5/2, could give punters a great start to 2012.
Inverness v St Johnstone (2.00pm)
Home win: 31/10 Draw: 11/5 Away win: 33/20
Key stat: The last four matches between these sides have seen two Inverness wins (3-0 and 2-0) and two St Johnstone wins (2-0 and 1-0).
Betting tip: With somebody keeping a clean sheet in each of those last four games, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see another clean sheet in this one. For Inverness to keep the ball out of their net, the odds are 11/5, while a St Johnstone clean sheet is priced at 23/10.
Dundee United v Aberdeen (3.00pm)
Home win: 21/10 Draw: 11/5 Away win: 13/5
Key stat: Three of the last four meetings between these two have ended 3-1, twice in favour of United and once in favour of Aberdeen.
Betting tip: It might be worth looking at betting on another 3-1 win in this game. The odds on the home side winning 3-1 are 31/2, while the Dons are at a whopping 30/1 to triumph by that scoreline.
Dunfermline v Celtic (3.00pm)
Home win: 9/1 Draw: 15/4 Away win: 3/10
Key stat: After nine SPL matches at East End Park this season, Dunfermline are still looking for their first home win.
Betting tip: Dunfermline’s terrible home record looks set to remain intact against a Celtic side looking for their tenth win in a row. The 3/10 odds on the away win looks about as safe a bet as can be had this Monday, but with a big Celtic win a possibility, a multiple score bet could also be worth checking out. A bet on a 4-0, 5-0 or 6-0 Celtic win is given odds of 27/4, while a punt on the new league leaders to win 2-1, 3-1 or 4-1 is at 31/10.
Kilmarnock v St Mirren (3.00pm)
Home win: 23/10 Draw: 21/10 Away win: 12/5
Key stat: St Mirren’s last three wins against Kilmarnock have been to nil.
Betting tip: With St Mirren still on a high after beating Rangers and braving Wednesday’s stormy winds to earn a 2-2 draw with Dundee United, and with Killie losing twice in a row, Saints look set to beat Kilmarnock for the second time this season. If they do beat Killie, history points to them winning to nil, which is priced at 17/4.
Rangers v Motherwell (3.00pm)
Home win: 3/10 Draw: 18/5 Away win: 19/2
Key stat: Last time Rangers lost to Celtic, their next four matches only saw them score three goals.
Betting tip: It seems unthinkable that Rangers could lose three in a row, but they host a tricky Motherwell side whose great away form has kept them in third place. And given that the Gers struggled a little following their last Old Firm loss, don’t expect a huge rebound win in this match. The Ibrox side should sneak a win at home, but expect it to be close. Therefore a punt on a home win with under 2.5 combined goals in the game, at 21/10, looks a great shout.
