Despite some exciting League Cup action over the weekend, with a brave St Mirren side dumping out favourites Celtic and Hearts progressing to the final after a penalty shoot-out victory over Inverness, the SPL had only three games and just two goals, but things should get a little more exciting with a full midweek schedule, starting with Motherwell’s clash with managerless Dundee United on Tuesday.
St Johnstone then welcome Aberdeen on Wednesday, while Celtic host Kilmarnock, Hearts meet Dundee, Ross County welcome Hibernian and Inverness travel to St Mirren.
We’ve got all six of these SPL games covered below and you can register here if you’re a new customer for up to £20 in free bets with your first deposit.
Tuesday, January 29th
Motherwell v Dundee United (7.45pm)
Home win: 11/10 Draw: 11/5 Away win: 11/5
Key stat: Motherwell have not won twice in a row since September.
Betting tip: Despite winning seven games since September and climbing up to third in the table, Motherwell have simply been unable to put two wins together. Having won their last game, this suggests another three points won’t follow against a United side that will be looking to make a fresh start after the departure of manager Peter Houston. Back the away side to pick up at least a point with a double chance bet on an away win or draw at 13/20.
Wednesday, January 30th
St Johnstone v Aberdeen (7.30pm)
Home win: 7/5 Draw: 9/4 Away win: 33/20
Key stat: Since Christmas Day these sides have just two wins between them.
Betting tip: Neither of these sides head into this game with much form. St Johnstone have won just once in eight league games, while Aberdeen are yet to pick up maximum points in 2013 after three winless games so far. So if you’re looking for a draw to put on your midweek coupon, then this match is probably a good bet.
Celtic v Kilmarnock (7.45pm)
Home win: 1/5 Draw: 5/1 Away win: 9/1
Key stat: Kilmarnock have already won at Celtic Park this season, earning a 2-0 victory in October.
Betting tip: After a semi-final defeat on Sunday, one might expect Celtic to come out and atone for their poor performance at Hampden with a big win. It’s worth noting, however, that Celtic have already lost back-to-back games twice this season, including a home loss against Kilmarnock after defeat by Barcelona at the Camp Nou. Backing a 9/1 Kilmarnock victory could be a cheeky outside punt, therefore, while 16/1 odds for Killie to lead at both half-time and full-time, as they did in October, could pay out even more.
Hearts v Dundee (7.45pm)
Home win: 11/20 Draw: 11/4 Away win: 17/4
Key stat: Dundee have just three wins in the SPL all season, but two of them were 1-0 wins over Hearts.
Betting tip: Could Dundee really beat Hearts 1-0 for the third time this season? If you fancy them to do so, then 21/2 is the price available on a repeat scoreline.
Ross County v Hibernian (7.45pm)
Home win: 5/4 Draw: 23/10 Away win: 37/20
Key stat: Hibernian have only scored three goals in six games.
Betting tip: Hibernian’s strikers need to start putting the ball in the net more often if they are to challenge for a European spot. But Hibs have never beaten Ross County in the four matches the two have played, making a punt on the away side not to score seem appealing, especially at a price of 11/5.
St Mirren v Inverness (7.45pm)
Home win: 33/20 Draw: 11/5 Away win: 29/20
Key stat: St Mirren have scored the first goal against Thistle in both their meetings this season.
Betting tip: These sides have already played out two 2-2 draws this year. With St Mirren still on a high after that incredible win over Celtic, expect them to be full of confidence at the start of this home game. Backing them to score first again, at evens, would double your money if it comes off.
