The first SPL action of 2013 is here and with an Edinburgh derby on Thursday night, it’s definitely a good start. Before that, though, we’ll see St Johnstone host Dundee, Aberdeen welcome Dundee United, Celtic battle it out with third-placed Motherwell and Kilmarnock travel to St Mirren. The Highland derby between Ross County and Inverness may have been rained off, but the games going ahead are set to provide an exciting start to the year.

Wednesday, January 2nd
St Johnstone v Dundee (2.00pm)
Home win: 3/5 Draw: 13/5 Away win: 4/1
Key stat: Between them these sides have scored just three goals in the last three matchdays.
Betting tip: Dundee have scored just twice in their last three games, while the Saints have put the ball in the net just once. When you consider as well that just eight goals have been scored over the last five times we’ve had this fixture, then a bet on fewer than 2.5 goals on Wednesday, at 4/5, must be appealing.
Aberdeen v Dundee United (3.00pm)
Home win: 23/20 Draw: 11/5 Away win: 23/10
Key stat: The last eight meetings between these two have seen both teams score.
Betting tip: If recent history is anything to go by then both keepers could well be beaten again in this one. If both sides do get on the scoresheet then make the most of it by backing this outcome at 18/25.
Celtic v Motherwell (3.00pm)
Home win: 17/50 Draw: 15/4 Away win: 6/1
Key stat: Celtic have not lost back-to-back SPL games since 2008.
Betting tip: After defeat at Hibernian last time out, Celtic will be keen to get back on track at home. The fact that they haven’t lost twice in a row in the league since 2008 makes Celtic worth adding to any midweek accumulator at 17/50.
St Mirren v Kilmarnock (3.00pm)
Home win: 27/20 Draw: 11/5 Away win: 7/4
Key stat: St Mirren are unbeaten at home in four matches.
Betting tip: It wasn’t too long ago that the Saints were on a six-game losing streak. Things have turned around for Danny Lennon’s men, however, and they’ve lost just once in eight games – that loss coming at Celtic Park. Scoring first has definitely contributed to the Buddies’ good run so it could be worth backing them to open the scoring for the fourth home game out of five at odds of 87/100.
Thursday, January 3rd
Hearts v Hibernian (7.45pm)
Home win: 21/20 Draw: 23/10 Away win: 9/4
Key stat: Hibs ended an Edinburgh derby winless streak of 12 matches with victory over their neighbours in December.
Betting tip: It’s Hibernian who have been in better form this season and they will look to claim another derby victory on Thursday night. A correct score bet on them to win 1-0 again, as they did in December (and not to mention last weekend against Celtic), could be worth a punt and is priced at 17/2.
