Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor has delivered a worrying message to Gers fans ahead of the new season by underlining the urgent need for new players.
Ally McCoist’s side have been in Herzlake, Germany for the last week preparing for the first game of the season against Hearts on 23rd July.
While all three matches Rangers have played on the tour have ended in defeat, McGregor says the training camp has gone well.
Scotland’s number one noted fitness levels throughout the squad have improved dramatically during the team’s time in Germany, meaning the players will be able to hit the ground running when the season starts in earnest.
However, he believes the tour also served to highlight a concerning lack of strength in depth in the Rangers squad which could work against them in the Scottish Premier League title race.
As it is, Rangers are already second-favourites in bwin’s title betting market behind bitter rivals Celtic, with odds on the Gers to make it four championships in a row standing at evens.
A successful £25 free bet on Rangers to finish first, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £50.
“Our fitness levels are coming and hopefully they continue rising over the next ten days so that we’re ready for the start of the league,” McGregor explained following Rangers’ 2-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen.
“At the same time, I think we have seen how much we need to get the right people in and pretty sharpish at that.
“Our whole team played 90 minutes tonight and although we had subs to bring on, they were young and we need to get some new signings into the club.”
Nevertheless, Rangers are looking good to beat Hearts at Ibrox in the season opener, with early Rangers v Hearts betting making the home side 3/10 favourites to claim all three points.
It is later on in the season when the fixtures come thick and fast that Rangers could be exposed unless McCoist manages to inject new life into his squad.
