Motherwell go into Sunday’s showdown with Celtic in the unusual position of finding themselves above the Glasgow side in the league.
With three points the difference between the sides, Stuart McCall’s men will put clear daylight between themselves and their opponents with a win at the weekend.
If only it were that easy…
Motherwell have failed to score against Celtic in five of the last six meetings in the SPL and, worse, they have won just six times in the 48 games the sides have played since the SPL began in 1998.
Celtic have won 33 of them, the last two of which have both seen 4-0 victories for the Bhoys, including a 4-0 triumph at Celtic Park earlier in the season.
With this in mind, it is little wonder that Celtic are odds-on favourites to win this one at 53/100, while Motherwell are priced at 5/1 to win, with the draw available at 14/5.
But things might not be as straightforward as they first seem.
Celtic have failed to win in five of their 12 SPL games already this season, winning seven, drawing two and losing three.
This includes a run of only two wins in their last six SPL games.
Motherwell, on the other hand, are unbeaten in six games going into this one and can genuinely claim to be the form side.
With this in mind, odds of 29/10 on Motherwell to be winning at either halftime or fulltime seem very tempting indeed, as do odds of 29/20 for Motherwell to either win or draw.
Nevertheless, Celtic secured a morale boosting win over Rennes in the Europa League on Thursday night, and midfielder Joe Ledley has issued a passionate rallying call telling his teammates that they must win every game they have left between now and the end of the season if they are to win the SPL title.
With the stakes so high for Celtic, another slip up is unthinkable for Neil Lennon.
He really needs his side to make a bold statement, and a commanding win is vital if Celtic are to make the SPL title race interesting again.
Backing Celtic to win starting from a 1-0 handicap will get you odds of 7/5, and with both their long and short term record against Motherwell being so good, this seems like a great shout.
