Arsene Wenger has earmarked Karim Benzema as the man to help Arsenal fans get over the loss of some of the club’s biggest stars and boost the Gunners’ title challenge.
It has been a tumultuous few weeks for Wenger, who is battling to convince key midfielders Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas to stay at the club having already lost left-back Gael Clichy to Manchester City.
With former Charlton defender Carl Jenkinson the only new player brought in this summer, Wenger knows it will be a hard task to convince football betting fans that Arsenal are still capable of competing for top honours.
Prospects of a 14th top-flight title will certainly look bleak if Nasri and Fabregas leave, with Arsenal odds of Premier League success likely to lengthen should this scenario play out.
However, the Daily Mail reports that Wenger is banking on the arrival of Karim Benzema as a way of restoring confidence in Arsenal and making the north London side’s odds of 13/2 to win the league look good value.
According to the news provider, a £27 million offer has been made by Arsenal for the Real Madrid striker, with Wenger keen to marry the French striker’s attacking talents with those of Robin van Persie.
One spanner in the works could be the indifference of Benzema to the move, with his agent Karim Djaziri recently telling Spanish newspaper Marca: “The idea is to keep Benzema at Real Madrid to fight and improve.
“I do not know that Madrid want to sell and I’m not negotiating anything with Arsene Wenger.”
On the bright side, Arsenal are finally expected to clinch the signing of Gervinho from Lille on Friday.
A successful £25 free bet on Arsenal to win the Premier League, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £187.50.
The Gunners’ first game of the new season will be away to Newcastle on Saturday, 13th August, with Newcastle v Arsenal odds indicating Arsene Wenger’s side will be good enough to claim all three points.
