Wigan Athletic are now 2/5 (from 7/10) be relegated from the Premier League after Aston Villa thumped Sunderland last night to go five points clear of the relegation zone.
A hat-trick from Christian Benteke and goals from Ron Vlaar, Andreas Weimann and Gabriel Agbonlahor gave Paul Lambert’s side an incredible 6-1 win at Villa Park, lifting them to 37 points, level with the Black Cats and Newcastle and just one point behind Norwich City.
But crucially, Villa’s win means the Latics are now five adrift of safety and though Roberto Martinez’s side have a game in hand, with just four games left they have it all to do to extend their eight year stay in the Premier League.
Villa, who did their goal difference the power of good last night, are now 6/1 to go down, with Newcastle a 13/2 chance and Sunderland quoted at 14/1. On 38 points, Norwich are 16/1 to be playing Championship football.
This weekend, Wigan go to West Brom, Newcastle travel to West Ham while Sunderland host Stoke. But the most intriguing game comes at Carrow Road, where Lambert takes Villa to face his old club Norwich knowing a win would all but secure their top flight status.
