Wolverhampton Wanderers travel to the home of one of their fiercest rivals on Saturday as they look to continue their impressive start to the season.
Mick McCarthy’s men have recorded two wins in their first two league matches and followed this up with a Carling Cup success in midweek.
This has put them joint-top of the Premier League table and safely through to the third round of the cup, although bwin’s 3Way football betting market suggests they will have trouble extending their winning run to four games against Aston Villa.
The Villans are also undefeated this season having drawn 0-0 with Fulham and beaten Blackburn 3-1 in the league before making it through to the third round of the Carling Cup with a 2-0 win over Hereford.
As such, they go into the match against Wolves as 19/20 favourites to take all three points, with a draw priced for 47/20 and a Wolves win at 14/5.
Although Wolves started the campaign with victory at Ewood Park, their record away from home last season fully justifies their status as underdogs.
The Old Gold picked up just 12 points on their travels during the 2010-11 campaign, making them the joint-second worst side on the road in the entire division.
Hitting the back of the net was a particular problem, with just 16 goals scored in 19 games.
Bearing in mind Aston Villa had the joint-eighth best home defensive record in the Premier League last season, a bet on the Villans to keep a clean sheet could pay off at odds of 33/20.
That said, Villa were not prolific scorers on their home territory either, meaning a 1-0 win for Alex McLeish’s side could pay dividends at odds of 29/4.
A successful £25 free bet on Aston Villa to beat Wolves 1-0, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £206.25.
Wolves’ head-to-head record against Villa does not inspire confidence either as they have won just one of the two sides’ last 18 encounters.
However, there is hope as the game they won was their last meeting and it came at Villa Park as well.
So Wolves have a chance, although with Villa building momentum under McLeish a home win remains the best bet.
