Robin van Persie moved to within one goal of Liverpool hitman Luis Suarez in the race for the Golden Boot last night after scoring in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with West Ham.
The Dutchman rescued a point for the champions-elect at Upton Park as he reacted quickest following a Shinji Kagawa strike which hit both posts, firing the loose ball home from close range.
Van Persie appeared to be in a offside position when Kagawa let fly, but the flag stayed down and the former Arsenal skipper snapped up his first United goal from open play in 12 games with glee.
Of course, he had been experiencing a well-publicised drought prior to notching a penalty in the Reds’ 2-0 triumph at Stoke City on Sunday.
But that goal at the Britannia Stadium and last night’s effort in east London moved the former Arsenal skipper on to 21 for the Premier League season, with Suarez still stuck on 22 after suffering his own three-game barren run.
The bwin bookmakers reacted to Van Persie’s latest strike by slashing his odds of retaining the Golden Boot from 7/4 to 11/10, while Suarez has now drifted from 1/2 to 13/20.
In other words, anyone registering with bwin today would win £42 if they successfully back Van Persie to finish the season as Premier League top scorer with their free £20 bet.
With a home game against struggling Aston Villa next up for United, there is every chance that the 29-year-old’s return to form will continue – so this could be the last chance to snap him up at odds-against.
The logic for backing Van Persie now is further strengthened by the fact that Suarez’s next game – a clash with in-form Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday – offers less chance, on paper at least, of him ending his mini-drought.
