Arsenal will be looking to new captain Robin van Persie to provide the goals against Sunderland having relied heavily on the previous incumbent in this fixture in the past.
Cesc Fabregas, now a Barcelona player after moving to the Nou Camp in the summer transfer window, was a scorer in three of the last seven fixtures between the Gunners and the Black Cats.
Indeed, he accounted for 60 per cent of the goals scored by Arsenal in the seven games in question, with Arsene Wenger’s side only hitting the back of the net five times in total and drawing a blank in two of the games.
Van Persie appears the most likely to weigh in with goals for Arsenal having scored three goals in his last five appearances for the club, including a brace in the last home league match at the Emirates against Bolton.
With this in mind, Van Persie could be a good bet to open the scoring against the Black Cats this afternoon, with this option available at odds of 11/4.
However, Mikel Arteta’s record against Sunderland suggests the Spaniard could be the man to replace his fellow countryman as Arsenal’s most likely source of goals.
The attacking midfielder, brought in by Wenger as a replacement for Fabregas on transfer deadline day, has scored three in his last six appearances against the Black Cats in the blue shirt of Everton.
This makes the 8/5 on him to score at any time an attractive option, with a successful £25 free bet on Arteta to hit the back of the net against Sunderland set to return £65.
Meanwhile, Steve Bruce is also looking to replace the attacking threat of a departed player.
Darren Bent scored two goals for Sunderland against Arsenal in the time it took Fabregas to score his three against the Black Cats, but the England striker is now an Aston Villa player.
Ironically, the man brought in to replace Bent this season has history of scoring in the fixture, although for Arsenal rather than Sunderland.
But with the on-loan Nicklas Bendtner prevented from featuring against his parent club, it could be another former Danish Gunner, Seb Larsson, who most troubles the home defence.
Larsson is top scorer for Sunderland in the league with two goals and is priced at 4/1 to add to his account in north London this afternoon.
