Media sources aplenty go with the rumour that Wold Cup winning centre-half Mats Hummels has agreed a deal to join Manchester United this summer.
Usual suspects such as the Daily Star and the Metro quote that a £37m fee will be heading Borussia Dortmund’s way for the 25-year-old, who was, to most people’s eyes, the best defender in Brazil last summer.
We await the unveiling of Hummels in the red of United, who have also been freshly linked with the Dortmund man’s international and club teammate Marco Reus.
As previously mentioned on news.bwin.com, German red top Bild believes FC Bayern Munchen are no longer in the race to sign Reus, meaning United, Real Madrid, Chelsea and long-term admirers Arsenal received a boon in their hopes to bag the oft-injured but much trumpeted forward.
The 13-time Premier League champions are also widely and frequently reported to be chasing BvB midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. With Jurgen Klopp’s side rock bottom of the Bundesliga, and much more likely to be relegated than retain their Champions League place, a summer fire sale seems inevitable.
Van Gaal insists the Red Devils will see out January without any new faces arriving, but Arsene Wenger already set off the Emirates faithful’s quavering emotions with Gabriel Paulista, buying the £13.4m Villarreal centre-half six months too late.
He sounds likely to make the same mistake again in holding midfield however, with reports doing the rounds that Arsenal have identified Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin as the man to fill their screening role, yet won’t make a £15m move until the summer.
In the other north London stronghold, Spurs continue to moitor wide-forwards, with recycled rumours regarding Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk’s Yevhen Konolpyanka and Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez wheeled out once more by the Mirror and the People.
We’ll have more on Pochettino’s prospects of picking up his old charge later on news.bwin.com…
