Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea played out a highly entertaining 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge last night but the result has done little for Spurs’ hopes of finishing in the top four of the Premier League, with bwin making both the Blues and Arsenal the strong odds-on favourites to win the three-horse race for two Champions League places.
In a very watchable game that was largely end-to-end stuff, Chelsea twice led through goals from the Brazilian pair Oscar and Ramires, but were pegged back by a sublime long-range effort from Emmanuel Adebayor and a late Gylfi Sigurdsson strike.
While it could yet prove a vital point for Spurs, with two games left they are relying on their London rivals slipping up.
Despite this, manager Andre Villas-Boas was remaining positive.
He said: “Now somebody else will have to drop points, but our focus is on us doing our job in the remaining fixtures.
“In the Premier League, anything can happen. The league is absolutely unpredictable and hopefully it can fall our way.”
His opposite number Rafa Benitez bemoaned his side’s inability to kill the game to pick up a win that would have all but confirmed Chelsea’s place in the top four.
“Twice we had the advantage and we could have killed the game,” the Spaniard said.
“We didn’t do it and then we gave the ball away. We had to control the second half much better.”
Nonetheless, the point has kept Chelsea in third place, two points ahead of fourth-placed Arsenal and three clear of Spurs in fifth, and it means that even if Villas-Boas’ side win their two remaining games they are not guaranteed a place in the top four.
Chelsea, who need just one win from their remaining two fixtures thanks to their superior goal difference, are now 3/50 with bwin to secure Champions League football, while Arsenal are also odds-on at 3/10.
Tottenham are now 31/20 to finish in the top four, but with games away at Stoke City and home to Sunderland, they could well end up with maximum points, meaning Arsenal would also need to take their full quota from their matches at home to Wigan Athletic and away to Newcastle United on the final day.
Chelsea travel to Aston Villa on Saturday before ending their season with a home match against Everton.
