Tottenham Hotspur are the new 3/1 favourites with bwin to sign Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke after fresh reports today suggested that the White Hart Lane club are about to beat Arsenal, Liverpool and Atletico Madrid to the striker’s signature.
The north Londoners have already been busy in the summer market with the signing of Brazil midfielder Paulinho from Corinthians and are also closing in on Barcelona forward David Villa as manager Andre Villas-Boas looks to ensure transfer business is tied up early to avoid the last-minute dashes of previous years.
But the prospective signing of Villa doesn’t look like it will stop Spurs going for Benteke, who impressed in his debut season in English football, scoring 19 Premier League goals to become the highest scoring under-23 player in the top five divisions in Europe.
It has made the Belgium international hot property, with several clubs interested in snapping up the forward, who moved to Villa Park from Genk for just £7 million last summer.
Villa boss Paul Lambert has insisted that the player is not for sale and has chastised the forward for public comments at the end of the season that suggested he would like a move to another club in World Cup year.
But Tottenham have reportedly been encouraged by the fact that the player has yet to sign a new contract with the club and with a bid of around £25 million believed to be enough to persuade Villa to sell, Spurs think they are in pole position to move for Benteke.
The 22-year-old is now 3/1, in from 5/1, to sign for Spurs, who have replaced north London rivals Arsenal as favourites to capture the hitman’s signature.
The Gunners are widely expected to seal a deal for Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid in the coming days and have been pushed out to 9/2 to buy Benteke.
Liverpool were also favourites at one point this summer and they too are 9/2 to sign Benteke – although much depends on the uncertain future of Luis Suarez.
Atletico Madrid have also been heavily linked given their need to replace the Monaco-bound Radamel Falcao and bwin go 9/1 that the Spaniards sign Benteke.
Villa are 2/5 to keep Benteke at the club, while he is 10/1 and bigger to sign for other teams.
