The relative failures of Arsenal and Newcastle yesterday have afforded Tottenham a lifeline in the race for a Champions League place which they would not have expected.
Yet Spurs have been struggling recently in a way that had seemed so unlikely just a couple of short months ago.
Just one win in their last nine Premier League games has seen them go from potential title challengers to Europa League contenders.
Central to this slump has been an inability to score enough goals, with just one netted in their last three matches.
With Blackburn having conceded more away goals than any other side in the top flight though, they are perhaps the perfect visitors to White Hart Lane, having also lost their last five matches against the North Londoners.
With 16 goals this season, Jermain Defoe is Tottenham’s leading scorer and if given a starting berth by Harry Redknapp, the England man will fancy his chances against a side which have conceded 41 goals in 17 away matches this season.
Defoe is priced at 4/1 to open the scoring and a tempting evens to score at any time.
Gareth Bale, meantime, has scored 12 times for Spurs this season and netted twice against Blackburn last term. The Welshman is offered at 6/1 to repeat that feat of scoring two goals or more.
For Blackburn, their main goal threat remains Yakubu, with the Nigerian’s 17 league strikes providing a rare highlight in an otherwise dismal season for Rovers.
Spurs have only kept one clean sheet in their last seven home games and the physical presence of Yakubu could well prove to be problematic for a defence short on confidence.
The Blackburn forward is priced at 8/1 to break the deadlock at White Hart Lane, which looks tempting for a small value bet, given his decent goalscoring form and Spurs’ propensity for conceding goals at home.
