Bosnian bulldozer Edin Dzeko takes the floor in the latest Premier League top scorer credential-outlining session, with the Manchester City striker looking to justify odds of 16/1 to top the charts come May.
Given the Citizens’ attacking brilliance, the former Wolfsburg man is never going to be found wanting for opportunities and the form he signed off the previous campaign in suggests he’ll go closer than his price suggests.
Here’s how he rates:
Premier League Pedigree
After being handed his highest number of starts since becoming a Citizen in January 2011, Dzeko compensated his manager to the tune of 16 goals, 12 of which were scored in a second-half-of-the-season flurry from January onwards.
He’s equally predatory in the big games as he is against the small fries too, netting against the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Everton, as well as scoring a crucial brace in the club’s 4-0 rout of Aston Villa that effectively guaranteed them the title.
The fact that he shares a price with Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and is more than double the odds of Chelsea new boy Diego Costa – both entirely unproven in the top-flight – speaks volumes about the value behind his digits.
Given the sheer volume of net-rustling riches available to Manuel Pellegrini, it’s highly likely that Dzeko will frequently feel the pull of the rotation tractor beam.
There have been widespread reports in the past concerning his frustration with a lack of game time and, with Sergio Aguero the undoubted leader of the goal-getting pack, minutes spent on the bench could well scupper his chances of personal glory.
With an army of midfield shaman slicing defences up for him, the chances are on tap for any Man City frontman.
Only Chelsea averaged more shots per game than the Citizens last season, while Liverpool were the only franchise that managed to work the keeper more regularly.
Amazingly, the 28-year-old has never missed a Man City match owing to injury.
His bill of health is cleaner than most so don’t expect to see him twiddling his thumbs in the physio’s quarters this term.
