Riyad Mahrez is apparently at the top of Arsene Wenger’s wish-list, but Arsenal’s record signing from Premier League colleagues suggests that they should steer clear of the Leicester man.
Petr Cech joined the north Londoners from Chelsea this summer, with a reputation as one of the best keepers in the Premier League.
Last season, Danny Welbeck and Calum Chambers joined from Manchester United and Southampton respectively, with injury preventing both from having stellar careers at the Emirates.
Going even further back into the archives, the deals for Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Debuchy, Mikael Silvestre, Francis Jeffers and Richard Wright show that Arsene Wenger can’t make stars of those already in the Premier League.
Conversely, the French boss has had a lot more luck in recent years when he has turned to Spain for recruitment.
Mesut Ozil was brought in during the 2013/14 campaign and after taking some time to adjust has proven himself to be arguably the top-four regulars’ star man.
The German midfielder has provided 18 Premier League assists this season, more than anyone else in the top-flight.
Similarly, Alexis Sanchez has been integral for the Gunners since his move from Barcelona in 2014.
The Chilean winger scored 16 league goals last term, making him the club’s top scorer, and found the net in Arsenal’s 4-0 FA Cup final win over Aston Villa.
Therefore, if Wenger is looking to recruit a new wide man over the summer, he should look to La Liga rather than the Premier League and there are a number of talented options.
Marcos Asensio, who can play through the middle as well as on the right, of Espanyol has the most assists of any player in the Spanish top-flight outside of the big three of Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real, who actually loaned him to the Catalan side.
However, at only 20, he may not be seen as the finished article and the pursuit of Mahrez suggests Arsenal want a bigger name.
Therefore, Antoine Griezmann should be at the top of Wenger’s shortlist, with the French winger scoring 20 league goals for Atletico Madrid this season.
