Judging by the Twitterati reaction to the news that England will require a new captain, there are clearly at least two Steven Gerrards.
The FA were proffering this version shortly after the Liverpool legend announced his international retirement…
…and a few of his fellow pros were inclined to agree, although a usual suspect was beginning to stick the boot in.
The other Steven Gerrard has been something of a disappointment to Three Lions fans, who have attacked the 114-cap Scouser’s modest goal record in major tournaments, as well as his propensity to make the odd mistake.
They may have the semblance of a point, and Gerrard was bound to be pilloried after his rollercoaster last 12 months, which really should have seen Liverpool win their first Premier League title, but instead ended in ignominy for the Reds skipper.
Gerrard’s goal record for Liverpool is just shy of one every four games, while his international strike-rate is closer to one every five-and-a-half fixtures, so some of the criticism is justified.
However, if you look really, really closely you may spot one or two other agendas…
