His manager might still be declaring the title race dead in the water but Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has talked up his side’s chances of finishing above neighbours Manchester United in the final Premier League table.
According to Citizens boss Roberto Mancini’s public declarations, it is inconceivable that United will throw away a five-point advantage with just four matches to play – even if one of those matches is against City at the Etihad Stadium on April 30th.
However, Tevez is more optimistic, suggesting that success will be theirs as long as they maintain the form which has seen them win their last two matches by an aggregate score of 10-1.
“Of course we can still win the title,” he told City TV.
“Obviously we have to put pressure on United. We just need to continue to play the way we are and we will arrive at the top. Mathematically it’s not impossible.”
Nevertheless, City are 9/2 outsiders to win the title, although the good news about this is that a successful £25 free bet on the Citizens to finish first will return a healthy £137.50.
Tevez: “We just need to continue to play the way we are and we will arrive at the top. Mathematically it’s not impossible.”
This compares with winnings of just £28.75 from a £25 stake should United hold out at the top at odds of 3/20.
Crucial to City’s chances of winning will be Tevez, who has forged an impressive strike partnership with fellow countryman Sergio Aguero since returning to Manchester from exile after a bust-up with Mancini.
Their form in front of goal will give fans of the Citizens hope that they can win their remaining four games, while United, in addition to their trip to the Etihad, have a tricky assignment against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on the last day of the season.
It could yet be a good idea to heed the words of Tevez rather than Mancini.
