Had Jose Mourinho himself had access to the Premier League fixture generator, he couldn’t have selected a better opening day opponent for the Chelsea than Swansea.
After winning the 2014/15 campaign at a canter, the Blues begin the defence of their crown against the south Wales side at Stamford Bridge and it comes as no surprise to see them installed as monster favourites for victory.
A price of 2/5 says the hosts prevail against the 15/2-rated Swans, while it’s a weighty 15/4 for those who envisage the spoils being shared.
Having won each of their last five fixtures against this adversary as well as Mourinho boasting six opening day wins from as many matches in charge of Chelsea, the west Londoners will be highly confident of landing the former of the three match-betting wagers.
If this is too thin to tempt a bet though, we’ve got some trend-based longer odds wagers for the more speculative punters:
Chelsea to win to nil @ 21/20
Just once across the aforementioned quintet of defeats have Swansea rustled the Blues’ net, as was the case in the a goalless draw at the Liberty Stadium that preceded this lengthy losing streak.
Of Mourinho’s six curtain-raising successes at the Chelsea helm, only two foes have sullied his side’s laundry, as four fell without scoring.
Chelsea to score over 3.5 goals @ 21/10
Those opening day games in which the Blues have been schooled by the Special One haven’t been especially goal-filled, but when Swansea have faced either the would-be champions or those defending the title since first arriving in the Premier League, they’ve shipped four goals.
Manchester City walloped them 4-0 en route to claiming the 2011/12 title and Manchester United ransacked the Liberty 4-1 in their first league game since claiming the 2012/13 equivalent.
Draw HT/Chelsea FT @ 3/1
Looking at the Blues’ previous 11 competitive home matches, a run which encompasses three of the four competitions they entered last term, they’ve gone in level on eight occasions.
While they may not have converted all of these into victories, the overwhelming statistical support saying Chelsea will prevail here makes this bet the pick of the HT/FT selections, and the price certainly can’t be argued with.
If further convincing is required, bear in mind this is exactly what happened in the corresponding fixture last season.
