In-demand Napoli forward Edinson Cavani has appeared to pave the way for Chelsea and Manchester City to battle it out for his signature after cooling talk of a move to Spain.
Cavani is currently on international duty in Brazil preparing for the Confederations Cup, which begins on Saturday, but that has not stopped the constant speculation about the forward’s future.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentis has already admitted that Chelsea are very interested in taking the forward, who scored Uruguay’s goal in their 1-0 World Cup qualifying match against Venezuela last night, in a rumoured £50 million deal.
And Cavani, who has struck 104 goals in three years at the Italian club, has stated that he doesn’t see himself playing in La Liga for either Real Madrid or Barcelona come next season.
“I don’t know if Spanish football suits me,” Cavani told reporters.
“Football there is wonderful as everyone knows, you have more freedom, but I don’t know what will happen.”
Cavani had previously stated his desire to play under Mourinho or incoming Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, saying: “The Special One? It would be a pleasure to be managed by someone like him. Chelsea? I don’t know if they’ve made an offer for me but I know that working for a coach like Pellegrini or Mourinho would be a great pleasure.
“It would certainly be a great honour to join one of the illustrious teams that are looking at me because I dreamed about doing that as a child. At the moment, though, I am only focused on Uruguay.”
All this has moved bwin to make Chelsea the 3/20 favourites to sign Cavani, ahead of Real Madrid at 7/2 and Man City, who have been cut from 5/1 to 9/2 in the wake of the striker’s latest comments to the press.
Cavani is 19/4 to still be at Napoli on September 1st, while it is 28/1 and bigger for the forward to sign for any other side this summer.
