Steven Fletcher might be Wolves’ most prolific marksman, but the record books suggest that he will not be firing his side to victory against Man City at Molineux this weekend.
The Scotland international had a strong first half of the season, scoring eight times before the New Year, but he has only notched twice in 2012 and hasn’t found the net at all in any of his last eight games.
He has fallen off the radar so much, in fact, that one major betting site has mistakenly listed him as being on loan to Plymouth Argyle – confusing him, of course, with veteran Bournemouth striker Steve Fletcher, who actually is on loan at the Pilgrims.
This slump in form is not an isolated incident either. In 2009/10, Fletcher (Steven, not Steve) scored just once in his last nine matches as Burnley slumped to seven defeats, leading to relegation.
The logical conclusion to draw from this is that if Steven Fletcher is given the service he will bang in the goals, but if his side start to struggle, as Wolves have done for a while now, his impact will diminish considerably.
For this reason, backing Fletcher to score first at 9/1, or to score at any time at 5/2, is unlikely to yield a return.
Instead, Matt Jarvis, who has scored three of Wolves’ last six goals, or Michael Kightly, who has scored in two of his last four starts, could be a better option.
Jarvis is 4/1 to score at any time, while Kightly is 9/2 to find the net.
Even with Mario Balotelli suspended, Man City are spoiled for choice in attack and have been boosted by Carlos Tevez’s return to the side, and to the scoresheet, in recent weeks.
Unsurprisingly, the City forwards dominate the goalscorer market for this one. Tevez has scored four times in two games and is 3/4 to score at any time on Sunday, while he is 3/1 to score first and 3/1 to score last.
Sergio Aguero scored twice against Norwich last weekend and he is available at 13/20 in the anytime market, while David Silva is 6/5 to find the net for only the second time in 16 Premier League matches.
Tevez’s recent form makes him the most likely to do the damage, though, and staking your free £25 bet for joining bwin on the Artgentine to score first at 3/1 could net you £100 if successful.
Recommended bet: Carlos Tevez to score first @ 3/1
