Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are all trying to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski – but are they about to be disappointed in their efforts to bring the forward to the Premier League?
It had originally been thought that Lewandowski, 25, was to follow in the footsteps of his Dortmund teammate Mario Goetze and sign for rivals Bayern Munich this summer – a bitter blow for manager Jurgen Klopp after Bayern had beaten his side to the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League titles last season.
But with Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke adamant that they would not let another star player go to the Allianz, the way appeared clear for the English trio to make their move for Lewandowski, who hit 36 goals last term.
Yet in another twist to the story, Watzke has now come out and said that Lewandowski will remain at Dortmund for another season despite having only one year left on his contract, meaning the Pole can walk away for nothing next summer – in all likelihood getting his move to Bayern in the end.
In a statement that seemed to dash the hopes of United, City and Chelsea, Watzke said: “Robert will definitely be playing for Borussia Dortmund next season. We need this security to be able to plan (for the season).”
And if you think he is true to his word, then you can get 4/5 that Lewandowski is still at the Westfalenstadion on September 1st.
His comments have made bwin lengthen the price on Lewandowski signing for Man Utd this summer from even money to 5/2, as well as change the odds on a move to Chelsea from 4/1 to 5/1.
However, the odds compilers are far from convinced a move to Bayern this summer is out of the question, as they go 9/10 that the former Lech Poznan star signs for Munich in this transfer window.
Manchester City are 14/1 to prise Lewandowski from the Bundesliga, while it is 25/1 and bigger for other clubs to sign the Pole.
