Two teams at opposite ends of the form table meet at St James’ Park on Saturday, with unbeaten Newcastle up against a Wigan side who have lost their last six games.
Given this, it is hardly surprising that the Magpies are 57/100 favourites to pick up all three points and entrench their position in the top four.
Wigan’s chances of winning appear even more remote than their odds of 5/1 for victory suggest, not least because scoring a goal is likely to be a big issue.
Not only do the Latics have to contend with the fact that Newcastle have the joint-best defence in the league – along with the two Manchester clubs, they have only conceded six in eight games – but they are having their own problems in attack.
With just six goals scored in eight games so far this campaign, Wigan have the worst goalscoring record in the league alongside QPR and Wolves.
This makes Newcastle to keep a clean sheet a good bet, not least because of the attractive price of 11/10.

In addition to being solid defensively, Newcastle also average almost two goals a game at St James’ Park and the form of Leon Best and Demba Ba in particular suggests they should have little trouble continuing in a similar fashion.
They will be helped along by Wigan’s tendency to ship goals with alarming frequency – they have let in ten in their last four matches.
And with the Latics struggling to hit the back of the net, even a draw appears to beyond Roberto Martinez’s side at 11/4.
Indeed, the most likely result appears to be a Newcastle win to nil at 3/2, and with this in mind a 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 final result in the multiple correct score market could be the standout bet at 9/5.
