There can be little mystery surrounding the majority of weapons at the disposal of Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.
Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata have been delighting Premier League audiences consistently throughout their careers in the division.
Meanwhile, new arrivals this summer include World Cup and Champions League winner Bastian Schweinsteiger and £30m wide-forward Memphis Depay.
Given such stellar training buddies it can be little surprise that Ashley Young will head into the 2015/16 campaign in relatively clandestine fashion.
Yet, after three largely quite seasons at the club, the man once hailed as the heir to Old Trafford great Ryan Giggs’ left-wing berth enjoyed a phoenix from the flames year in Van Gaal’s first term at United.
In it he earmarked himself as a potential secret weapon ahead of the new campaign.
Having once been viewed as Giggs’ successor the former Aston Villa man repositioned himself as an attacking descendent of United jack of all trades John O’Shea.
Young acquitted himself with aplomb in three left-sided roles for the Iron Tulip in 2014/15; full-back, wide midfield and attacking midfield.
By the end of the campaign he had seemingly superseded £59m-plus summer signing Angel Di Maria, who had been man of the match in the Champions League final just a year previously, in Van Gaal’s affections.
He started all four of matches of the winning streak that began with the side’s long-awaited ‘click’ against Tottenham and amounted to their best form of the season.
Man-of-the match performances in the 4-2 win over Manchester City (in which he scored and provided two assists) and against Crystal Palace rubber-stamped his return to prominence.
Depay’s expensive and exciting arrival seems certain to inhibit Young’s involvement during the season ahead.
The bwin odds compilers have set his under/over league appearances bar at 15.5 for next term, with both sides of the abyss available at 17/20.
Yet, given the way he clearly won his manager’s admiration last term, it looks a solid bet that the man we’ve afforded secret weapon status should reward overs backers.
