Chelsea and Liverpool are among the clubs interested in swooping for out of contract Fenerbahce left-sided defender Caner Erkin.
The source of the rumours is Batur Altiparmak, the player’s agent, who suggests: ‘I don’t usually like giving names but it is great for the player’s confidence that clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea are showing an interest’.
Both clubs are likely to field converted right-backs on the port-side of the defence as the bid to see out the campaign with victories over Newcastle and Cardiff, rated as 9/25 and 1/5 shots respectively.
Yet, Jon Flanagan and Cesar Azpilicueta have provided one Premier League assist between them in 47 starts this term, illustrating the attacking benefits to be gained from the acquisition of a made-to-measure left-back.
When it comes to potential acquisitions in the position, few are likely to provide as heady a combination of creativity and value for money as Erkin.
The 25-year-old Turkish international has been on the watch list for Premier League clubs since March, with viewing delegations from Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool watching him in action for his nation in their victory over Sweden.
Given he sits joint-top of the Turkish Super Lig assist standings, with a whopping 14 goals made, it’s not hard to see why.
Having also notched three times this term he possesses a ballistic left foot, with interested readers encouraged to YouTube his stunning volley against Kayserispor in December 2013.
Altiparmak also suggested that ‘two clubs from England have made a bid’ although he did not clarify whether or not they were the two he had previously mentioned.
Meanwhile, the agent dismissed rumours in recent days that Internazionale were close to signing Erkin as wide of the mark.
Out of contract in less than a month it’s thought that the player will first discuss his situation with Fener, but he would undoubtedly rate an excellent acquisition for the cost of a relatively modest signing-on fee.
