Arsenal host Bolton on Saturday afternoon and Arsene Wenger is still searching for light at the end of his long, summer tunnel.
His new captain Robin van Persie is now critical to their season and Wenger will be praying the Dutchman can rekindle the form that saw him score 18 goals in the remaining 25 Premier League games last season.
He was the first goalscorer on five of those occasions and is 11/4 to repeat that feat against Bolton.
Meanwhile, Gervinho scored the first goal of their ill-fated match at Ewood Park last weekend and he is a tempting 9/2 to do the same at the Emirates on Saturday, and can be backed at 11/10 to score in the 90 minutes.
Looking at the goalscoring market from a Bolton perspective, Kevin Davies will be eager to get at Arsenal’s lightweight defence and corners and set pieces will be Bolton’s best chance of goals.
That gives the like of Davies and Gary Cahill every chance to get on the scoresheet. Davies is 9/4 to score anytime in the match and 8/1 to score first, while centre back Gary Cahill is 25/1 to score first and 13/2 to score anytime.
Arsenal could have unearthed the latest young England star in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain but he is unlikely to start despite his goal in mid-week.
Should he overcome the knock picked up on Tuesday night and get a chance from the start, he is 8/1 to get the first goal of the game and 2/1 to score anytime.
A more sensible bet may be to back him to score last, also at 8/1.
There are a lot of Arsenal players capable of goals and Robin Van Persie is the obvious choice.
However, Arsenal’s leaky defence will not enjoy an afternoon up against Kevin Davies’ physical approach and for this reason he’s my best bet.
New bwin customers can use their free £25 to back Kevin Davies to score anytime at 9/4 and see a return of £81.25.
For a higher risk but equally highly rewarding bet, back Davies to score the first goal of the match at 8/1. That would see your free £25 bet turn into an impressive £225. Not bad for a free bet!
