In case you missed it there’s an international break on, and not even a good one, frankly, with friendlies leaving football writers little of substance to report apart from poor Jack Butland’s cracked ankle and Jamie Vardy’s unlikely England career.
Thankfully, there’s always rumours to fall back on, and there are a couple of crackers going round at opposite ends of the believability spectrum.
Empoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski, who is thought to be firmly on Liverpool’s radar, has reportedly ‘talked around’ a potential move to Anfield, with these comments attributed to the 21-year-old in Polish news source Futbolfejs:
‘Some people may think it’s only rumours but I know something more about it…I am working hard with Empoli so that in June I may have a chance [to make] such a big transfer.
‘I have spoken with [former Dortmund midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski] who plays in Fiorentina now about Klopp…He told me about his personality, how is Klopp to the players, gave me some tips, but nothing is known yet.
‘Everyone knows Coutinho who is very technically gifted. He can shoot with either foot, no matter if it’s left or right…It would be great to play alongside Coutinho. I am sure we could be a good duo on the pitch. We’ll see what will happen.’
A more distinct ‘come and get me plea’ hasn’t been heard at bwin towers for quite some time, but as with many Italian-based transfers this won’t be an easy deal to strike – Zielinski is currently on loan at Stadio Carlo Castellani from parent club Udinese.
That being said, at least it’s a believable rumour, much more so than The Mirror’s splash that Arsenal will beat Manchester United to the post-season signing of Borussia Dortmund hitman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, parting with over £60m of their hard-earned in the process.
If there’s any truth in this it must also spell the end for famously tight-fisted Gunners gaffer Arsene Wenger, who had to be cajoled into splashing out the club’s current record £42.5m on Mesut Ozil by long-suffering Emirates season-ticket holders a few summers ago.
The Gabon star has smashed a whopping 35 goals in 40 games for BvB this term though, so maybe ‘Le Prof’ will surprise us all.
