Blackburn Rovers are interested in luring Ruud van Nistelrooy back to the Premier League.
The Dutchman is currently plying his trade in Germany with Hamburg, but his contract is up at the end of the season and he has made no secret of his desire to leave the Bundesliga side.
Rovers, who are priced at 9/5 to go down in bwin.com’s Premier League relegation market, originally tried to sign Van Nistelrooy in 2009 but could not match his wage demands.
However, with new owners Venky’s still pushing to bring a big name to Ewood Park, Rovers boss Steve Kean revealed that the former Manchester United striker is on their list of summer targets.
“Yes, I can confirm we are interested,” he said in an interview with ESPN Soccernet.
It is believed that Rovers will attempt to use Michel Salgado, who played alongside Van Nistelrooy during their time together at Real Madrid, to encourage him to join the club.
Speaking in the Sunday Mirror recently, Van Nistelrooy revealed his frustration at failing to seal a mooted return to the Bernabeu in January as Real boss Jose Mourinho sought cover for the injured Gonzalo Higuain.
But the 34-year-old admitted that he is open to the prospect of returning to England, where he was a consistently short price in the Premier League top goalscorer betting markets.
“I am thinking about a nice club in England after this season, or a club in Spain,” he told the newspaper.
Any deal for Van Nistelrooy aside, Kean’s main concern will be arresting a run of two draws and four defeats in his side’s last six games which has dragged them into the battle to avoid the drop.
Rovers travel to title contenders Arsenal this weekend and are priced at 9/1 to pull off what would be a shock victory.
