QPR’s hopes of Premier League survival were given a major boost yesterday after the announcement that Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandes had secured a controlling stake in the club, ending any involvement from the unpopular Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone.
After months of speculation that the duo were looking to sell their majority holding in the R’s, hence their recent reluctance to back Neil Warnock in the transfer market, this move should bring some much-needed stability back to the club.
With the takeover also likely to result in the increased involvement of the wealthy Mittal family, who were instrumental in the move to bring Warnock to Loftus Road, bwin’s odds of 17/20 for Rangers to go down look far less tempting than they did just a matter of days ago.
Following the conclusion of the deal, Fernandes stated that he would back Warnock with the necessary funds to add quality to the squad, and with just under two weeks of the transfer window remaining, be sure to expect a number of new faces arriving through the door before August 31st.
The knock-on effect is that the prices on teams such as Norwich (9/10), Swansea (13/20), Wigan (33/20) and Blackburn (7/4) to go down should be capitalised on now in case they shorten dramatically amid a flurry of transfer activity in west London in the remainder of the month.
Fernandes has also hinted at repairing a rather strained relationship between the club and the fans. While the deal has only just been signed, the feel-good factor appears to have already returned and the backing of the supporters will be essential in the club’s bid for survival.
Despite last weekend’s 4-0 defeat to Bolton Wanderers, the QPR squad are likely to be in a buoyant mood for their trip to Goodison Park and will be eager to impress the club’s newest arrival in the boardroom, as well as looking to improve on their opening-day result against a side who have gained a tag as slow starters in recent years.
While a victory at 7/1 might be slightly optimistic, bwin’s football betting odds of 13/4 on the R’s to gain a share of the spoils against David Moyes’ side should be considered, with a tempting 1-1 draw at 8/1. Having now had time to settle in at the club and with 13 Premier League goals to his name last season during his time with Blackpool, DJ Campbell to score the first goal at 9/1 is also worth a punt.
