Chelsea are priced up at 12/5 to win the Premier League after it was confirmed that Jose Mourinho would be taking charge of the Stamford Bridge club for a second time.
Mourinho, who has just ended a three-year spell in charge of Real Madrid, had been widely reported to be the man Roman Abramovich wanted to replace interim manager Rafa Benitez, who left the club to take over at Napoli last month.
And after a succession of hints had been dropped by Mourinho, Chelsea have finally confirmed the move through the release of an official statement.
Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said: “I am delighted to welcome Jose back to Chelsea. His continued success, drive and ambition made him the outstanding candidate.
“It is our aim to keep the club moving forward to achieve greater success in the future and Jose is our number one choice as we believe he is the right manager to do just that.
“He was and remains a hugely popular figure at the club and everyone here looks forward to working with him again.”
As Gourlay hinted, the news is music to Blues’ fans ears after the fractious and controversial appointment of Benitez, and with the former Liverpool boss stating before his exit that Chelsea “will spend £100million this summer”, has Mourinho returned to the club at just the right time?
bwin make Chelsea 12/5 third favourites to win the Premier League for the first time since 2010, behind Manchester United and Manchester City (both 2/1), while the bookies go 9/1 that Mourinho crowns his return by winning the Champions League and become the first manager in history to win the European Cup with three different clubs.
The Blues are 6/1 to win the FA Cup in 2014, while Chelsea are priced up as 9/100 shots to make the top four – a bet that looks safe with Mourinho at the helm, who will be looking for a period of success similar to his first stint in charge.
