Chelsea look good bets to become only the third team to win their first game of the new Premier League campaign when they take on Stoke this afternoon.
After an opening day of four draws, the Blues are 3/4 favourites to inflict a home defeat on Tony Pulis’ side in bwin’s 3Way football betting market.
Meanwhile, the Potters are 7/2 underdogs to pick up three points, with a draw priced at 5/2.
The omens are not good for Stoke, particularly as a home team has yet to win in the 2011-12 Premier League so far.
To make matters worse, the Potters have not beaten Chelsea since their Premier League return in 2008, losing five and drawing one of their six league matches.
This run includes a 7-0 drubbing in April 2010, although that game was played at Stamford Bridge rather than the Britannia Stadium.
While Stoke managed to draw with Chelsea the last time they met, the form shown by Pulis’ side in pre-season suggests this result is not about to be repeated.
Before two 1-0 victories over Hajduk Split in the Europa League, Stoke had lost to Brentford and Aldershot and drawn with Sheffield Wednesday, drawing blanks in all three games.
With this in mind, betting on Chelsea to keep a clean sheet this afternoon could pay dividends at odds of 5/4.
A successful £25 free bet on Stoke failing to score, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £56.25.
Chelsea, on the other hand, have won all of their pre-season games under new manager Andre Villas-Boas and the Portuguese will be looking for his team to carry this form into the league campaign.
The Blues conceded just one goal in their friendly fixtures and scored an average of 2.5 goals a game, pointing towards a 2-0 final score at the Britannia at odds of 29/4.
And while Stoke football betting fans might point to Chelsea’s seven defeats on their travels last year, backing the Blues to get the Villas-Boas era off to a winning remains the best option.
