Unless Radamel Falcao suddenly has a change of heart about rainy Manchester and diverts his plane London bound, then Arsenal will miss out on their top summer centre-forward target.
Gunners chief Arsene Wenger has repeatedly made clear that he will not buy any old striker just for the sake of it, and after failing to land the Colombian you can get 1/2 on Arsenal not bringing anyone in up front before the window closes.
Optimistic Gooners can have 7/5 on Wenger pulling another rabbit out of the hat, as he did with Mesut Ozil last term, which few people saw coming prior to the Germany international’s £42.5m switch from Real Madrid.
However, such a move looks highly unlikely at this juncture, with the only real whisper currently coming out of the Arsenal camp surrounding a possible swoop on Aston Villa for defender Ron Vlaar.
If you listen really, really closely you might hear talk of Wenger eyeing up a late bid for Manchester City’s Matija Nastasic, who will probably be fourth-choice centre-half at the Etihad when new signing Eliaquim Mangala gets his feet under the table at the Premier League champions.
There’s no talk of forwards though, so Gunners fans hoping for a clinical finisher to help Alexis Sanchez put away the multitude of chances Arsenal create – 24 in the 1-1 draw with Leicester, according to varied reports – look set to be let down again.
The onus will now be on Yaya Sanogo and Joel Campbell to start scoring, but with neither yet able to boast of an Arsenal goal, and last season’s top scorer Olivier Giroud out for the rest of 2014, the north Londoners’ drifting 12/1 title odds will only get bigger.
