Norwich and Sunderland both go into their game at Carrow Road this evening on the back of their first league wins of the season, although it is the Canaries who are favourites to build on their recent success and pick up another three points.
Following their 2-1 win over Bolton last week, Norwich have been installed as 27/20 favourites to beat the Black Cats, with a draw at 9/4 in bwin’s 3Way football betting market.
Meanwhile, Sunderland are priced at 39/20 to continue the form they showed in a 4-0 win over Stoke and inflict a third successive home defeat on Paul Lambert’s men.
The omens certainly point towards a home victory, and a 1-0 scoreline at that.
This is because the last five league meetings between the two clubs – admittedly stretching back to 1999 – have ended 1-0 to the home side, and a repeat of this scoreline is available at 13/2.
As a result, a successful £25 free bet on a Norwich 1-0 victory would return £187.50, with the free bet available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account.
However, Norwich have yet to keep a clean sheet this season, making a 1-0 scoreline unlikely and Sunderland good bets to score at 7/20.
But with Sunderland hardly prolific – they have failed to score in three of their six matches this season and have registered just once away from home – Norwich are still well-placed to earn their first win at Carrow Road since their top-flight return.
Lambert looks set to continue with the formula which proved successful at Bolton – with Elliott Bennett, Anthony Pilkington and Wes Hoolahan supporting a lone striker – and, with the Scot’s insistence on attacking play, back the Canaries to score at least twice.
As such, betting on a 2-1, 3-1 or 4-1 win for Norwich in the multiple correct scoreline market looks attractive at 9/2.
Punters could also find value in bwin’s red card markets given the recent disciplinary records of the two teams.
Norwich have already had two players red carded this season, while Sunderland have proved themselves as the team most likely to have someone sent off over the last two and a half years.
Black Cats players have seen red 15 times since the beginning of the 2009/10 season, with midfielder Lee Cattermole having first use of the soap on three of these occasions.
With this in mind, odds of 4/1 on there to be one red card in the match look appealing.
Meanwhile, those who envisage a hotly-contested encounter can get odds of 25/1 on there to be two or more players sent off.
