As the speed bumps in Chelsea’s hunt for the Premier League trophy pop up at various, unexpected points, Jose Mourinho is rumoured to be looking at throwing a wad of cash at his increasingly sticky situation by recruiting AS Monaco’s Radamel Falcao.
After dropping points in consecutive league games against Newcastle and West Brom, Chelsea are the 7/2 second favourites for Premier League glory with bwin.
Falcao has one less goal in the French league than all of Chelsea’s strikers in all competitions combined.
Since the departure of Didier Drogba, Chelsea have lacked a striker with the same kind of physical presence to batter the doors of opposition defences into tiny pieces.
Falcao certainly has that ability and his nine goals this season, all in Ligue 1, fall just one short of the combined efforts of Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o in the four tournaments they’ve contested so far.
The £50m man has averaged better than a goal every other game for his three European clubs.
The fact that Chelsea would have to better the price they paid Liverpool for Torres by £10m in order to acquire Falcao shouldn’t put them off, especially when the man known as El Tigre’s scoring record on the continent is examined.
Starting his European goalscoring tour in Portugal, the Santa Marta native bagged 72 goals in 87 games for Porto before knocking 70 past various Spanish-based keepers in 91 appearances for Atletico Madrid. Now with Monaco, Falcao has continued his impressive ability to find the net with 12 strikes in 16 outings for Claudio Ranieri.
The Colombian striker would be available for the Blues in the Champions League.
The fact that Monaco aren’t currently plying their trade in Europe only enhances Falcao’s attraction, as any outlay on his services won’t come handcuffed with the inability to select him in the Champions League.
