Swansea City striker Michu appears to be emerging as a real contender for the Premier League golden boot after firing a match-winning double against Arsenal on Saturday.
The Spaniard’s crisply-executed late strikes, which gave the Swans an impressive 2-0 triumph at the Emirates Stadium, took him on to ten goals for the season, propelling him into a tie for the lead in the top scorers’ race.
Michu, whose £2 million arrival from Rayo Vallecano over the summer is increasingly looking like the bargain of the season, has now seen his odds of landing the golden boot plummet from 50/1 to 20/1.
In other words, punters registering with bwin who back him to finish the season atop the goalscoring charts with their free £20 bet would pocket a whopping £420 if successful.
The drastic cut comes as Swansea’s best performance of the season confirms them as one of the form teams in and around the top four, with a six-match unbeaten run moving Michael Laudrup’s men up to sixth in the table.
While the two Manchester clubs begin to pull away in the title race, the leading contenders in the golden boot race are converging after another high-scoring weekend.
Another striker at the top of his game at an in-form club is Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe. The England forward made it four league goals in a week with a double in his side’s 3-0 win at Fulham.
Defoe’s golden boot odds have taken another tumble, from 16/1 to 10/1, now that he is positioned just one goal shy of the leading contenders with nine this season.
Joining Michu on ten goals is long-term favourite Robin van Persie, whose odds were trimmed from 7/4 to 6/4 after he netted once in Manchester United’s bizarre 4-3 win at Reading.
Given the huge numbers of chances that United have been creating of late, Van Persie should probably be clear of the pack by now.
Liverpool’s Luis Suarez also sits on ten goals but his odds have drifted from 5/2 to 3/1 after he failed to find the net in a 1-0 victory over Southampton and picked up a one-match suspension for a yellow card.
