Southampton have become Manchester United’s bogey side at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement three seasons ago, and with Jose Mourinho not having much luck against them in recent years, new boss Claude Puel can be hopeful of a shock 13/2 win at Old Trafford.
It doesn’t seem to matter who’s in charge of Saints either, with Mauricio Pochettino grabbing a 1-1 draw at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ during his only full campaign at the St Mary’s helm in 2013/14, and Ronald Koeman claiming successive 1-0 wins over old foe Louis van Gaal in the seasons since.
Jose Mourinho’s presence in the home dugout will lead many to take a 4/9 punt on the 13-time Premier League champions, who kicked off life under the Portuguese in fine fashion with a 3-1 victory away to Bournemouth.
However, Mourinho’s recent form against Southampton is almost as bad as the club he now leads, drawing 1-1 home and away during his title-winning campaign with Chelsea in 2014/15, and going down to 3-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge just over 10 months ago.
Furthermore, United bosses since Sir Alex haven’t had much luck in their first Premier League fixtures in front of the Theatre of Dreams faithful.
David Moyes saw his side play out a stale 0-0 draw with Mourinho’s Chelsea in the Scot’s opening top-flight clash at Old Trafford, while Van Gaal’s men went down 2-1 to Swansea in August 2014.
Puel’s outfit may not have covered themselves in glory during their opening-day draw at home to Watford, but by any measure they’re overpriced to take all three points home to the south coast.
The hosts will surely score though, with Swedish hitman Zlatan Ibrahimovic bagging in both his competitive fixtures so far for United. Southampton winning a match containing more than 2.5 goals might be an even better way to boost profits at 13/1.
