Manchester United have continued their squad regeneration with the signing of Ashley Young from Aston Villa.
Officially, Young is only the second player to arrive at Old Trafford this summer following the capture of Phil Jones from Blackburn earlier this month.
However, the transfer of David de Gea from Atletico Madrid is edging nearer to completion and United have long been linked with a star midfielder to replace the retired Paul Scholes, with Luka Modric and Wesley Sneijder both mooted targets.
Young’s arrival on a five-year contract is the latest piece in the jigsaw as Sir Alex Ferguson attempts to build a side capable of challenging Barcelona, the dominant force in Europe.
However, the England winger’s immediate priority is to help United retain their Premier League crown and secure his place in the record books.
Although he said he was happy at Villa Park, Young told MUTV that “the opportunity to come and play for one of the biggest clubs in the world is one I couldn’t turn down”.
“It’s a chance to hopefully become part of the history by helping to win the 20th title,” he continued.
“It’s a prospect I always looked at from being a child: to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
The Red Devils are bwin’s favourites to win the Premier League at 33/20, putting them ahead of Chelsea (11/4), Manchester City (7/2) and Arsenal (6/1).
A successful £25 free bet on United to finish first, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £66.25.
The title holders’ transfer activity over the last two weeks has seen their odds come in from 7/4 and they are only going to shorten further if United manage to bring in Sneijder or Modric.
