Liverpool are seemingly linked with a new player nearly every day at the moment, but it looks as though the Merseysiders are about to close in on their first singing of the summer as quickly as possible – and that man is Emre Can of Bayer Leverkusen.
Brendan Rodgers has Champions League football to contend with in 2014/15 – Liverpool are 22/1 to win the competition for the first time since 2005 – and knows that his squad needs an injection of genuine quality of the club are to push on after their unexpected second place finish in the Premier League.
Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno and Wilfried Bony and are all potential singings, but it is Leverkusen’s Can, seen as the future of German football, that looks set to become the Reds’ first major buy of what could be a busy summer.
Rodgers is in a rush to activate the apparent £10mil release clause in Can’s contract and complete the deal before anybody else swoops for the 20 year-old, and with good reason – the Leverkusen star would be a perfect fit for Liverpool.
With Rodgers looking to add young, hungry, talented and versatile players that are comfortable both on the ball and playing on the counter-attack, it is obvious why the Northern Irishman feels Can fits the bill.
Can, who is of Turkish descent, has captained Germany at every level from under U-15’s right through to U-21’s and is seen as a box-to-box midfielder in the mould of Bastian Schweinsteiger, adding the energy and mobility Rodgers likes in his team.
The former FC Bayern struck four goals in 39 games last season to help Leverkusen to finish fourth in the Bundesliga to set up a Champions League qualifier in August and has the versatility to play in all positions across the midfield.
FC Bayern have a buy-back clause on Can having sold him to Leverkusen for £4.5mil last summer, but that can only become active next summer, leaving Liverpool free to complete what would be a major coup.
